More than 200 local and international acts will grace 40 venues this November, led by a new flagship space

The fifth annual Melbourne Music Week is getting the ball rolling on its biggest event to date with the revelation of its first round of live acts as well as the industry showcase’s new flagship venue.

Looking at a final roster of 250 local and international bands and artists (across 110 events and 40 locations), MMW 2014 has started things off with a distinctly homegrown feel, with beloved Melburnian ensemble Architecture In Helsinki set to headline the event’s all-Melbourne opening gig at QVM on Friday, November 14, with a slightly belated celebration of recent fifth full-length NOW + 4EVA.

They’ll be joined by citymates Total Giovanni and the Rainbow Connection DJs, with the celebrations continuing the next eve with a launch of Cut Copy’s new Oceans Apart compilation, which shines a light on the city’s finest contemporary live dance and club musicians. In addition to the iconic locals, MMW will see sets from Andras & Oscar, Roland Tings, No Zu, World’s End Press, Sleep D, Speed Painters, and Nile Delta.

Hip-hop fans are well catered-for, too, with Speaker TV’s sixth birthday party (on Sunday, November 17) being led by All Day with help from esteemed peers L-FRESH The LION, Baro and The DYE. Disco/deep house takes over later in the evening, when Dusky and Ten Walls hit the QVM stage.

QVM isn’t the only venue sporting action during MMW, of course – over at Melbourne Recital Centre, you can find the ethereal A Winged Victory For The Sullen playing their most recent full-length, Atomos. Melbourne Town Hall will see the triumphant return of German electro trailblazers Tangerine Dream, who will grace an Aussie stage for the first time since 1975 this November, supported by stalwart locals Black Cab. Meanwhile, at the Australian Centre for the Moving Image (ACMI) will welcome Aussie rock legends The Church to live-score Jean Cocteau’s 1930 avant-garde film Blood Of A Poet on Friday, November 21.

Further beyond the tunes, MMW kicks on in partnership with the annual Face The Music conference, held from November 14-15, which this year welcomes such high-profile industry identities as former BBC Radio mainstay Jen Long and venerated producer and punk icon Steve Albini.

Melbourne Music Week this year bestows the honorary title of flagship venue upon the Queen Victoria Market, following previous installations of KUBIK Melbourne, Where?House at the Argus Building, and The Residence on the Yarra banks.

Tickets for Melbourne Music Week go on sale at midday today, September 10.
