There's a new four-part comedy for HBO in the works

More Flight Of The Conchords More Flight Of The Conchords

New Zealand's fourth-most popular folk duo Flight Of The Conchords will reunite for a new four-part comedy series commissioned by US cable network HBO, co-founder Jemaine Clement has confirmed.

Speaking in an interview with The Guardian to promote his new film, What We Do In The Shadows, Clement explained that the show had been on the cards for some time, but the independent, time-consuming production of What We Do... had pushed the process back somewhat.

"It was supposed to be this year, but then we decided to put What We Do In The Shadows out ourselves," he said.

There are no real details about the premise of the new series, or whether it's in any way narratively related to the universe of their previous show for the station, which ran for two seasons from 2007-2009 and garnered the gents a massive ten Emmy nominations in the process.

However, it's not the only Conchords project that Clement and McKenzie appear to have in the works, with oft-revisited rumours of a feature-length movie being addressed, as well as a long-held (pipe?) dream of crafting a Flight Of The Conchords musical.

"We talk about a movie every so often," Clement said. "Sometimes it feels like we lost a lot of impetus over the last couple of years. But Bret, [director] James [Bobin] and me, we all want to do a musical.

"It would be good to do something all together … I miss playing Flight Of The Conchords gigs."

Well, how about that — we miss seeing them, so any news that moves Bret and Jemaine closer to a reunion (and not one of those poxy "a few shows and we're out" reunions) — whether movie-length, theatrical, or just the new series — is good news.

UPDATE: Clement has denied that there will be a new Conchords show, explaining on Twitter that there had been a mix-up in the intent of his original quote. Rather than working on a new show for HBO with McKenzie, it would seem that Clement wants to clarify that only the first part of that sentiment is accurate.
