Dedicated performances from Ryan Bingham, Robert Ellis/Jonny Fritz and more

Brand new Americana festival Out On The Weekend sure knows how to spread the love, adding to their previously announced headline showing from US troubadour Justin Townes Earle with the revelation that Ryan Bingham, Robert Ellis & Jonny Fritz and Nikki Lane & The Delines will also be taking time out for their own festival side shows this October.

The Texas-bred, LA-based Ryan Bingham is no stranger to accolades, having won awards at the Oscards, Grammys and Golden Globes in his time, all for the the same track – The Weary Kind, from lauded feature Crazy Heart. He heads to Australia in the lead-up to the release of his fourth full-length Tomorrowland, an album the artist says “definitely … comes across live”, making these shows the perfect opportunity to get to know him if you don’t already. He’ll be joined by Melburnian singer-songwriter Harry Hookey and US-based expat Tim Wheatley for his set of headline shows, which kick off at Sydney’s Newtown Social Club on Tuesday, October 14, and take him through Lizottes in Kincumber, Brissy’s Black Bear Lodge, Mojo’s, Fremantle, and winds up in Melbourne at the Northcote Social Club on Tuesday, October 21.

The synergy achieved by Americana artist Robert Ellis and alt-country troubadour Jonny Fritz is an experience not to be missed, with Ellis making his third trip Down Under, having already visited twice last year with Justin Townes Earle. The acclaimed muso has received high praise for his debut full-length Photographs and sophomore The Lights From The Chemical Plant, going on to be nominated for three Americana Music Awards.

Fritz, meanwhile, steadily worked his way onto lists of artists worth keeping an eye on last year with his debut release under his birth name, Dad Country, looking to capitalise on that momentum when it drops in Australia via Lost Highway soon. The artists will see support from lauded singer-songwriter James Thomson, who is garnering his own comfortable pile of praise for his recent self-titled release. Their journey begins at The Toff In Town on October 21.

Nashville-based country chanteuse Nikki Lane locks arms with Portland-bred The Delines for their run of headline shows, with Lane’s forthcoming sophomore LP All Or Nothin’ (out via New West/Warner Australia on September 5) serving as a perfect point to get informed about what to expect from the stylish singer-songwriter when she kicks off at Sydney’s Newtown Social Club on October 21.

The Delines, fronted by novelist-cum-songwriter Willy Vlautin (Richmond Fontaine), include a capable contingent comprised of vocalist Amy Boone (The Damnations), drummer Sean Oldham, bassist Freddie Trujillo and keyboardist/trumpeter Cory Gray, a line-up whose debut LP, Colfax has achieved universally high praise following its international release – you’ll be able to get your hands on it through Warner Music Australia on September 19.

Support for both acts comes from Bex Chilcott, aka Ruby Boots, who is currently working towards the 2015 release of her debut album. That’ll see guest spots from the likes of You Am I’s Davey Lane, Jordie Lane and The Waifs’ Vikki Thorn.

Tickets for all shows go on sale at 9am this Friday, August 15. See the event website for more information or head straight to the Gig Guide or The Music App to get all the details you need to book your pass.
