The 'Breaking Bad' prequel spin-off welcomes a familiar face and a 'Spinal Tap' veteran

US cable network AMC has released its newest bounty of details about Vince Gilligan's upcoming Breaking Bad prequel Better Call Saul, including two new set photos and the official confirmation of the show's line-up of series regulars, including This Is Spinal Tap actor, co-writer and composer Michael McKean.

Also joining McKean and central star Bob Odenkirk in his reprisal of beloved shady lawyer Saul Goodman will be BrBa veteran Jonathan "Mike the Fixer" Banks (Community, Beverly Hills Cop), Rhea Seehorn (Franklin & Bash, House Of Lies), Patrick Fabian (Big Love, Grey's Anatomy) and Michael Mando (Orphan Black, The Killing).

McKean — who previously worked with Odenkirk as a guest star on the latter's cult comedy show with David Cross, Mr Show With Bob & David — will play Chuck, Saul's brother.

In addition to the cast list and the new pics, AMC also released the most comprehensive rundown of what to expect when Better Call Saul finally makes its debut.

According to AMC, the series will be set six years before Goodman meets Bryan Cranston's teacher-turned-meth-kingpin Walter White. At the time, he's known as Jimmy McGill, "a small-time lawyer searching for his destiny". As he further falls down the rabbit hole of hustling and crime-doing, he finds himself butting heads - and rubbing shoulders - with Banks' Mike "The Fixer" Erhmantraut. And so begins the long transformation into Saul Goodman. You know the guy.

This guyyyyyy.

As previously reported, AMC has such faith in Gilligan's prequel project that although they've pushed its debut back a couple months next year, they've also already greenlit the series for a 13-episode second season before its first ten-episode season has even aired.

Better Call Saul is expected to hit US screens early next year. Australian broadcast details are pending.
