The US star cancelled at the last minute

Janelle Monae was forced to cancel her performance in Melbourne tonight on what was meant to be the first leg of her co-headline tour with Kimbra.

The announcement came at the very last minute as fans at the Forum saw Monae's band setting up to play. But, instead Kimbra had to play the show as sole headliner.

Promoters Live Nation posted a message for ticketholders on their Facebook page at 11pm: "As announced by Janelle Monáe's band on stage, Janelle Monáe has been taken ill at short notice and was unable to perform tonight's scheduled show."

They went on to promise ticket-holders they could attend next week's return show by Monae and Kimbra, "Ticket purchasers are invited to attend Janelle and Kimbra's Melbourne show at the Plenary on Monday May 26. All ticket purchasers will be emailed by Ticketmaster on Monday May 19 with ticketing information about the May 26 show."
