One of Australia's most enduring rock bands of recent times, Grinspoon have announced their hiatus following one last 2013 show.

The first winners of triple j's Unearthed competition, the teenagers from Lismore have since forged an 18 year career complete with seven albums, 13 ARIA nominations, over 1,000 shows, more than 500,000 records sold and six consecutive top ten album debuts. Through it all the founding members Phil Jamieson, Pat Davern, Joe Hansen and Kristian Hopes have stayed together.

This long-term hiatus will give them the opportunity to pursue “individual projects” in the immediate future.

In a statement the band said today, “Thanks to all our families, friends, and especially our fans for the support over the last 18 years – it's been a wild ride to say the least.

“We are still a band of brothers but it's time for us to take a break and recharge the batteries. We're excited to see what our future holds… adios amigos, it's been a blast!”

Their last show for the foreseeable future will take place at Brisbane's Eatons Hill Hotel Friday 20 December, which the band, who've become festival favourites in the last decade, admit wasn't planned.

“It made sense to end this chapter of our careers after our last show for 2013,” they said. “We didn't want to get up on stage for the final time for now and not be able to share our news with our fans.”

In recent years frontman Jamieson has already started playing solo shows.
