Perth's top awards go through major expansion

Voting for this year's WAM Awards – the peak awards for the West Australian music industry – will be hosted at theMusic.com.au as the awards grow to a bigger venue.

With public voting kicking off next week when the nominations are announced Tuesday 1 October, the hosting of the public awards on theMusic will open up the categories to music fans across the country.

The Awards – affectionately known as the WAMIs – are going through a period of growth and in 2013 will upgrade from The Bakery to the 1050 capacity (in show mode) Astor Theatre. They will take place Friday 8 November.

WAMi Festival Director Brooke Kelly said today, “With the expanded outlook of the WAM Festival this year and new directions for WAM, teaming up with theMusic.com.au for the WAM Awards is the perfect partnership to help WA acts achieve even greater exposure nationally.

“Rather than being confined to WA voters, the public voting system now lets music lovers all over Australia voice their appreciation for their fave WA acts!”

WAM's CEO Wendy Were added, “The last 18 months have been a time of enormous renewal at WAM.

“WAM's mission has been adjusted from developing the industry to championing West Australian music. This reflects an outward-looking perspective, recognising WAM's growth from an industry organisation into a major player.”

The annual WAM Hall Of Fame presentation will also become part of the main WAM Awards night in 2013.
