Iconic Sydney fest announces anniversary

Sydney's Homebake festival is undergoing a massive format change for 2013, with the renowned Australian-artist event evolving into a three-day event on the Sydney Opera House forecourt.

Marking its 18th birthday, the news of the venue change was leaked earlier this week but the scale of the three-day format is the biggest upgrade for 2013.

With festival promoters saying that the move from The Domain and the three-day anniversary format is a “one-off”, The Presets, Birds Of Tokyo, Paul Kelly, Bernard Fanning, Gurrumul, Eskimo Joe, Architecture In Helsinki, Vance Joy, The Cat Empire, The Rubens, You Am I and more are all in line for the event, which is proudly presented by The Music.

Taking place Friday 6, Saturday 7 and Sunday 8 December, the first day 'The Opening Day' will be headlined by Paul Kelly and Gurrumul, Saturday's 'Put On Your Dancing Shoes' by The Presets and The Cat Empire and Sunday's 'Get Ready To Rock' by Birds Of Tokyo and Bernard Fanning.

As well as celebrating the festival's 18th anniversary, the move to the Sydney Opera House marks the 40th anniversary of the iconic venue.

The Opera House's Chief Executive Louise Herron said, “[Co-promoter] Michael Chugg was behind one of the first concerts on the Forecourt, the 2SM Concert of the Decade, featuring Stevie Wright, Skyhooks, Richard Clapton and Split Enz.

“Our 40th Anniversary is all about drawing on our heritage, as we launch into the future and the next generation of artists, audiences and visitors to the Opera House. So it is wonderful to be welcoming Michael Chugg and Homebake onto the Forecourt as part of our celebrations.”

Michael Chugg added “The Sydney Opera House forecourt is a special place to me. I have wonderful memories of delivering shows from some of the best Australian acts on those very steps, from the 2SM Concert of the Decade to the Crowded House Farewell To The World tour. I'm always passionate in the press about supporting local music and I couldn't be more excited to be a part of this unprecedented event, three nights of incredible Australian music in the most intimate capacity that Homebake's ever offered and at one of the most spectacular locations in the world.”

Homebake's other promoters are IMC and Village Sounds.

Comedy, bars, food and market announcement are coming as well.

Tickets go on sale 9am Wednesday 25 September through Homebake's website. The festival advised today that tickets to each day are strictly limited, given this year's more intimate capacity.
