A look at the local independent scene from the past seven days

ON THE ROAD

Georgia Fair and Robbie Miller have been announced as the support acts for The Paper Kites national tour. The run of shows kicks off next week. Details.

Brissy band The John Steel Singers are back with a new track and they're taking it out on the road. The band will perform a handful of east coast shows in September. More.

EYE ON THE CHARTS

Sheppard's reign in the top 20 of AIR's singles/EP charts for independent labels with independent distribution chart continued this week with their self-titled EP (Independent/MGM) claiming the top spot again. Second position went to Boy band What About Tonight again as well with their anthem Time Of Our Lives (Nammos Beach Records/Independent). Third spot went to a debut entry in the shape of Uncle Jed's cover of Matt Corby's Brother (Independent/Vitamin Records). The family band recently appeared on Australia's Got Talent.

Other debuts in the singles/EP chart came from singer-songwriter Joe Moore with Symphony (Independent/MGM) and Sydney's Tigertown with Wandering Eyes (Independent/MGM).

King Amongst Many (Elefant Traks/Inertia) from Horrorshow scored its second consecutive number one in the top 20 albums released on independent labels through independent distribution chart this week. Mark Wilkinson got a hold of second position with his debut entry Let The River Run (Independent/MGM).

Uncle Jed's AGT appearance also helped their self-titled album (Independent/Vitamin) enter in the chart at 15 despite its initial release back in 2010, while country songbird Dianna Corcoran debuted at 19 with her latest record Love & Therapy (Independent/WJO Records).

OTHER RELEASE NEWS

Indie pop-rockers Castlecomer have unveiled a brand new video. Danny's Den, off their most recent EP Lone Survivor, is one for the kid in all of us. Watch.

Melburnian's Empra have dropped a quirky video for their track Strange Condition. The team behind the clip are the same crew that created Gotye's Hearts A Mess back in 2007. Check it out.

Emerging rock outfit Teal will release their debut EP Hearth later this week. The five-track collection was produced by The Nerve's Lucius Borich. Listen.

SIGN THE DOTTED LINE

Newcastle band Seabellies have put pen to paper on a deal with Shock Records. A new album is slated for release later this year. Read on.

Big news for The Smith Street Band. The guys have signed an international deal with Asian Man Records, which will see three of their records released in the US and Canada. Details.

TIDBITS

The winner of this year's triple j Unearthed High competition has been announced, with Sydney garage rock trio Lunatics On Pogosticks the standouts from the pack. The band will now head into the studio to record a new track. More.
