Jason Newsted made himself a household name as the longest-serving bassist for metal gods Metallica, but now he's taking on a new pet project and swapping the bass for the mike.

The musician, who was also an integral member of Vovoid, Flotsam and Jetsam, will front a new four-piece metal outfit, aptly titled Newsted. The band will release their debut album Heavy Metal Music on Friday 2 August. The guys dropped a teaser EP earlier this year - here's a taste of what the quartet are all about with the track Soldierhead, which will also feature on the album.
