They come for a footy match, stay to play a couple of shows.

More Manic Street Preachers More Manic Street Preachers

The forthcoming British and Irish Lions tour is one of the most exciting things to happen in Australian rugby in years (though given our recent form that's not saying much, am I right?). Anyway, usually we're not allowed to talk about rugby because this is a music website, but this morning the Manic Street Preachers have allowed us the very rare opportunity to do so as they have just announced they'll be touring Australia to coincide with the games!

We're not making this up, you know. That is why they're coming. Here's a statement the band issued this morning.

"As massive rugby fans the chance to visit one of our favourite countries - play some gigs and watch the British and Irish Lions play Australia is an amazing once in a lifetime opportunity.  We can't wait to play a selection of our greatest hits to our Australian fans and the thousands of Lions fans travelling down under.  It should be an amazing and memorable few shows."

The band won't be touring quite as comprehensively as the team, playing only the two shows while they are here, but it's still a great chance for the band's many Australian fans to witness them in the flesh for the first time since 2010. We reckon there'll probably be a few other rugby tourists making it along to the gigs as well, just quietly.

Joining them on both of the dates are Brisbane's Hungry Kids Of Hungary; we are yet to acertain whether or not they are Wallabies fans, but we're hoping for some rivalry in the backstage rooms. At any rate they're a fine choice of support musically, their latest LP You're A Shadow proving they can smash out a pop song very tidily indeed.

The dates and details are as follows:
