Triple J Make Key Gains In Year’s First Ratings

18 to 24 year-olds in Sydney and Perth tune in to triple j

Public youth broadcaster triple j has made strong gains in Sydney and Perth for the key 18 to 24 year-old demographics, according to the first radio ratings of the year.

In the latest figures from Nielsen for the period from 28 October – 1 December and 20 January – 23 February (therefore including the Hottest 100), triple j gained 7.8 percent market share amongst Sydney's 18-24 age group. Now at 19.7 percent, it is the leader in that bracket.

In Perth they gained a massive 8.2 percent in 18-24, taking their total share to 28.2 percent. The closest competitor in that demographic, 92.9, is off the pace with 19.4 percent. The full state-by-state breakdowns are below.

SYDNEY

2GB still leads the overall Monday-Friday ratings with 12.9 percent (down 2.3 percent), which ABC702 at 11.2 percent (up .5 percent) and 2Day FM with 10 percent share (up 1 percent).

Triple j enjoyed one of the biggest jumps in the key time slots, gaining 2.3 percent in the afternoon (now 8.6 percent overall). They were also the biggest weekend gained, with a 2.6 percent jump to 7.5 percent. ABC702 is strongest on the weekend with 9.7 percent, jumping 2GB (8.9 percent) during cricket season.

MELBOURNE

3AW lead the Monday-Friday share with 13.9 percent, ahead of ABC774 with 12.5 percent. Triple M enjoyed gains in the morning slot (up 1.5 percent to 8 percent) and the afternoon slot (up 1.7 percent to 9.5 percent). Mix101.1 dropped 1.9 percent in the evening to 8.6 percent. The leading evening broadcaster is now ABC774, who rose 1.5 percent to 12.3. 3AW are at 11.6 percent after dropping 1 percent.

PERTH

The 18-24 domination for triple j may be thanks to a strong evening showing in the ratings, with the station jumping 1.4 percent to 10.9 percent overall. Evenings are lead by 96FM, who've a 15.2 percent share, down 1 percent. It's the only timeframe that the station lost ground in what was otherwise a strong period.

Mix94.5 is still the top frequency Monday-Friday, with a 14.5 percent share.

ADELAIDE

Mix102.3 remain the dominant station with a leading Monday-Friday share of 17.2 percent and a leading weekend share of 15.2 percent. They again dominate the afternoon listening with a 2.2 percent growth this period taking them to a 20.8 percent share.

Triple j had a strong period and were up across the timeslots. They were the strongest grower on the weekends as well, gaining 3.5 percent to have a share of 8.5 percent. They were no doubt aided by the popularity of the Hottest 100 broadcast.

BRISBANE

A tight Monday-Friday battle has swung the way of 97.3FM, who remain at 13.8 percent this period, ahead of Nova106.9 who dropped from being equal to m12.6 percent. Overall 4KQ were the biggest gainers, buoyed by a strong 3.1 growth in the mornings (up to 91. percent share) and 2.2 percent in the afternoons (up to 8.2 percent). They grew 1.9 percent overall Monday-Friday edge closer to the bigger stations with a 7.8 percent share.

Triple j were the biggest weekend gainers with a 1.9 percent growth up to 9.2 percent. 97.3FM lead weekends with a 12.4 percent share.
