Phil Jamieson and Pat Davern take us through their new album

More Grinspoon More Grinspoon

Rock veterans Grinspoon will release their seventh studio album this Friday 28 September, and it's a big of a shake-up for the band who've had a pretty strict formula on recent records.

Black Rabbits is that record – recorded when they weren't hanging out with Julia Gillard – and to mark the release we got the band to take us through each track on the record.

Grinspoon Black Rabbits track-by-track with Phil Jamieson (vocals) and Pat Davern (guitar)

1. Passerby – A classic tale of love lost. An awkward relationship between two people, neither wanting to be in (or relinquish control of). The first track written for the album. PD

2. Final Reward – Distance and a competitive desire make up the lyrical themes of this track. Got some crazy guitar solo in the middle of the song. Asks the question, 'What have we learned'? The answer is probably nothing. PJ

3. Beaujolais – Fun little dittie about drinking French wine and feeling alright. PJ

4. Branded – Think Steven King's Carrie. A forlorn teenager, bullied till despair, unable to express themselves due to lack of self belief. We have all know, or been that person before. Should we put up with it? PD

5. Carry On – An incredibly sad song in D-minor partially written backstage at Pier One Nightclub in Frankston. Longing and regret are the two biggies here. PJ

6. Just A Sound – A song that asks if you have betrayed everyone that once loved you, what are you left with? Has a nice Crazy Horse/Oasis thing going on. PJ

7. Emergency – Is it too late for the hero of this song? A moment in a persons' life when they have gone past the point of regret. Needing help and not knowing how to ask for it… A classic Grinspoon rocker. PD

8. Full Moon – A song about starting again. Leaving what's happened in the past, and beginning something new, safe in the knowledge that you won't make the same mistake twice. Reminds me of a cinema song, the happy ending to a sad movie. PD

9. Casualty – A tale of unrequited love and the stupid lengths one will go too to be near. I love the verse about flying a plane to Alice Springs. It has seen many different lives this song. Wasn't an easy one. PJ

10. Another Sun – A country tinged rock song featuring Chris Cheney from The Living End. A big chorus about getting it right when it could have gone wrong. Came a long way from demo stage to album. PD

11. Tightrope – Evil soothsayer inspired track. Snake oil salesman styles. Contains some of my favourite lyrics on the album. The 'buddy, buddy, buddy' line never fails to amuse me. PJ

12. Raise Your Glass A celebration song. A congratulations for a job well done (last song on the record, haha). Different sound to typical Grinspoon. Upbeat and happy. A very major melody. PD

13. Battleground (bonus track) – Classic Grinspoon riffs. Heavy and drop tuned. I love the call and response in the chorus. A call to arms for the downtrodden. One of the final songs written for Black Rabbits. PD
