He says Melbourne is "Australia's music capital"

Michael Gudinski, Chairman of the Mushroom Group of companies, has been awarded the Melburnian Of The Year honour at this weekend's Melbourne Awards.

Following in the footsteps of previous recipients such as Ron Barassi, Andrew Gaze and Susan Barton, Gusinksi was recognised for his contributions to the city through music.

Gudinski, who was named the most powerful person in the music industry in the AMID Power 50 earlier this year, was noted for his work with Sound Relief which, along with input from other promoters, raised $10 illion for the Black Saturday bushfires and Queensland floods.

After recieving the award, Gudinski dubbed Melbourne Australia's music centre.

"I've lived and breathed Melbourne my whole life," he said. "Melbourne is after all the Australian music capital. I'm absolutely humbled and honoured to be given such a prestigious award from the city that I love so much.”

Lord Mayor Robert Doyle thanked Gudinski for his charity work and for putting many Melbourne bands "on the map".
