More The Presets More The Presets

Ahead of their new album Pacifica, Sydney electro duo The Presets have admitted that despite writing some of their biggest club tracks for the record, they don't hit the dancefloors themselves anymore.

Speaking to theMusic.com.au at Sydney's Modular headquarters today, we asked if they were still lurking around dancefloors at 4am for inspiration.

Drummer Kim Moyes deadpanned, "I think we did enough of that sort of research in the last 15 years to last a couple of lifetimes.”

Moyes said, “It's the pretty tried-and-tested Presets method. It's the same thing as Beat On/Beat Off or Let's Go, and you can draw the lineage between those tracks in our catalogue and it's just the same old stuff to us I think.”

“You don't have to be living it every weekend to remember it, you know?" added frontman Julian Hamilton. "I haven't been to a nightclub in a while. I imagine they're still the same.”

Even though you won't see them in the wee hours anymore, their club influence is something they won't lose anytime soon.

“It's always been there, it's always been a part of our sound," Moyes said. "You know, it's not something that we wanted to get rid of completely, we wanted to progress with certain elements with this record and sort of push further with sounds that we haven't really explored before, or lyrically or whatever. The core Presets thing is still there, it's still very much based around music that's meant to be enjoyed in a big clubby environment or a stadium sort of situation.”

Moyes and Hamilton also spoke candidly about how the plan when they set out to make what is easily their most musically diverse long-player to date was to make their most cohesive, of their steady rise from iconic small rooms like Ric's and the Hopetoun to festival main stages, and preparing for their live return with a headline slot on this year's Parklife tour.

The band will release Pacifica Friday 7 September through Modular. So far two tracks have been released. A four-part video interview series will be live on theMusic.com.au in the lead-up to the release.
