"All that negativism doesn't have a point. It's like walking down a street, and a girl walks by you who's 20 pounds overweight, and you go, 'Oh, you fat cunt'."

Billy Corgan, the outspoken frontman of The Smashing Pumpkins, has opened fire on the music industry in a new interview.

Ahead of his Australian tour, which will see his band play Splendour In The Grass, an intense Corgan claimed toDrum Media Perth's Cam FIndlay, in an interview to be published in the coming weeks, that there was a culture of negativity in the industry.

"It takes a lot of emotional and psychic energy to make an album," he said. "So anyone can tear down one song, but it takes a lot of energy to tear down a whole album. You've gotta work really hard."

He added, "All that negativism doesn't have a point. It's like walking down a street, and a girl walks by you who's 20 pounds overweight, and you go, 'Oh, you fat cunt'."

He also appeared disillusioned with the industry's mechanics.

"The industry nowadays tries really hard to sell you something whilst trying to convince you that they're not trying to sell you something... When a band like Soundgarden reforms, there's millions of dollars to be made, there's soda pop to be sold."

Corgan - who has branched out into other fields, like wrestling, recently - has had his fair share of run-ins with the media, from the reaction to albums or the decision to reform the band with new members.

"When Siamese Dream came out, it was destroyed by the media, but now it's considered a classic," he admitted. "Now they all say, 'He'll never make a record as good as Siamese Dream'. I've just been around long enough to see the stupidity of the whole situation.

"In the end, I'm gonna be known for my music, not for my big mouth."
