Live Review: Yacht Club DJs, Twinsy

Yacht Club DJs farewelled Sydney in their own daggy style.

It’s always hard to say goodbye, particularly to party people like the Yacht Club DJs. Ballarat boys Guy Chappell and Gaz Harrison deliver a party that’s both daggy and slick, a bit scruffy because they’ve been playing in the ‘80s pop section of the local Vinnie’s rather than as designer hipster types.

There wasn’t much chat tonight except for some sweetly humble introductions: “We’re going to play bits from the last ten years, from year one to now. Let’s just have a fucking house party!” Over the next little while ‘singles’ from their mixes They Come Out At Night… Mostly, Oddity Number 5 and Find Me A Macchiato Pronto featured and were themselves remashed, getting the room down with just a plain excuse to sing along to Sonia Dada or to enjoy the Star Wars theme mixed with Kylie’s version of Celebration: so very, very daggy, so very, very good. While there were also some of the standard tricks, of the ‘put your hands up in the air’ type, the vibe in the room was a mixture of old school rave and school dance, complete with what seemed like a near endless line of virtual conga lines going up around the back as punters would get into something, go for a quick breather, then rush back for the best bit of Mysterious Girl.

Big props to support Twinsy (also featuring Guy Chappell) – done good, played hard. Starting with some Arcade Fire-like breezy pop and getting to a trippy end of things with single, Tear It Down, and a charmingly loose version of White Town’s Your Woman. While the Yacht Clubbers are hanging up their caps, Twinsy are just gearing up, so looking forward to hearing more.
