"As authentically soulful as anything from the '60s."

New York label Daptone literally do make them like they used to and here's a solid gold double album showcase of 21 songs recorded over the last 13 years or so that sound as authentically soulful as anything from the '60s.

With everything from their biggest star Sharon Jones belting Retreat to The Budos Band's menacing instrumental 007-isms recorded to tape in their House Of Soul studio, the only digitalism employed are the fingers on the old mixing decks. Choice picks from Charles Bradley and Saun & Starr are as smooth as any bourbon and well worth savouring.
