"If you are going to talk about something, it better be fun."

“I think that everyone has had horrible and dark stuff. Things that you question your own sanity just because you thought if it and stand up is this wonderful place where you actually get to talk about it not with a therapist but out loud in front of an audience.”

Kyle Kinane's comedy is the classic observational kind; he has a good knack for pointing out bullshit. Kinane performed at Melbourne Comedy Festival last year and his observation about the Melbourne scene was pretty on tune.“I think it's masterful stuff when it all comes together as one fluid mostly humorous play . But then it seems most shows you can kind of tag on at the beginning, 'You know my dad used to teach me lessons,' and then you do your stand-up in the middle and then at the end you say, 'Those are the lessons my dad taught me'. People think you tied it together, but you really didn't.”
As Kinane puts it though, if you are going to talk about something, it better be fun. “I suppose it's a lot of me bullshitting about ghosts. Enough people dwell on religion or politics. That stuff is kind of just depressing. Ghosts are a good old silly time, right?”

A lot of Kinane's witticisms and craft, usually regarding his lack of success, is something that stems from his experiences growing up. “My friends were funnier than me growing up. The reason they were funny was because everyone was broke and nobody had success there and there was this slow idea 'Oh, my dreams weren't going to come true', but if you bitched about it and made other people laugh, then it was okay.”

His point of view is still fresh, exciting and beautifully immature. Kinane has got a longer season and after a great year in the States behind him, he is worth checking out.

Oh, and which ghost does Kinane want to meet? “I kind of think once David Lee Roth dies he is going to make the best ghost. That has more to say about me that I want a ghost who is still alive. I wish him a long prosperous career, I just want him to come as a magical ghost.”
