How sweet it is

Canadian comic DeAnne Smith talks about living the sweet life.

DeAnne Smith is one of those few comedians capable of finding the comedy fast lane and putting her foot down. She first grabbed the mic seven years ago. As she puts it, “I went to an open mic, babbled somewhat incoherently under a too-bright spotlight, and then never stopped.”

Smith started international touring in 2008 and was nominated for the prestigious Barry Award at MICF last year. On her 2012 Australian tour she's staying longer and playing more cities. “Some of my favourite comics in the world are Australian: Sam Simmons, Adam Hills, Hannah Gadsby, Wil Anderson, John Conway,” she admits.

The 32 year old says her love of comedy stems from staying up as a kid to watch the Live At The Improv stand-up series on TV with her dad. Now, many years later, she's kicking goals in the same profession. Even though she lost out on the Barry (to the very worthy UK comic Russell Kane), it must have felt great to be nominated?

“Right now, I feel like I've really made it, because you asked me a 'How did it feel to be nominated?' question. Isn't that what people ask real celebrities with major accomplishments? This is amazing ... Um, it was fantastic. I wasn't even at the show where they announced the nominees; it was totally off my radar as a possibility. So, to find out that I'd been nominated, alongside some of my favorite comedians, was such a great surprise.”

Smith's show this year is called Livin' The Sweet Life, which stems from thinking about what it means to be living high on the hog now her career is really taking off.

“I realised recently, as I've been putting the finishing touches on the show, that I end up talking a lot about chicks, and money. Apparently my version of the sweet life is like a rap video from the late '90s. Oh, and I have some amazing stories in this show: one about how I tried to hook up with a girl and instead ended up in the ER until nine in the morning. Yeah, I got game.”

And what of the rumours of ukulele numbers, and free candy being handed out in the show?

“I can confirm both of those rumours are indeed true. What I cannot confirm are rumours of dancing girls and free cars.”
