Pub Grub: The Penny Black

With plenty of tables and chairs out the front, you can watch all manner of Sydney Road locals walk by. There’s a band room with music on most weekends that is always free, and a Royale Beer Garden out back complete with astro-turf in summer. The beer garden is the largest section by far, which will please many, no doubt. DJs spin music in the beer garden most weekends and Thursdays as you sit in comfortable wooden booths under shade.

The menu is modern Australian pub style, with head chef Dion creating pub classics and home-style dinners like the chicken parma, roast beef, steaks and burgers. For vegetarians try the vegetarian burger, and for the snackers, there is $4 pizza throughout the week. Pizza is by far the most popular item on the menu, and with good reason. A crowd favourite is The Penny’s Banger: a meat lover’s, sausage-style pizza.

On tap there is an extensive range of boutique beers and ciders and the same goes for the list of wines. There will be something for everyone, basically! Heading into the summer months, The Penny Black puts on a range of cocktail jugs that are light, fruity and suitable to share in hot weather. Just what you want and need.

The Penny Black was formerly Brunswick GPO, built in 1909, which is where the beautiful heritage listed brick façade comes from.
