BAR SIDE

The Keg & Brew pays tribute to the establishment’s humble beginnings by maintaining original features such as their tiled exterior and grand central bar while adding their own touch of décor.

There’s definitely a tongue-in-cheek spaghetti western theme instilled – cowhide panels appear on the bar, and brown leather banquettes and more stuffed animal heads than a taxidermy store can also be spotted. You might even see a portrait of Dolly Parton. Even the gaming room has a unique atmosphere; aptly named (or so we hope) the Lucky Lounge, this area features lucky horseshoe chairs.

Speaking of brews – there’s a lot. The pub boasts one of the largest ranges of beer and cider in Australia with 33 individual taps. There is a strong focus on Aussie craft beer, but if you’re more of a traditionalist, don’t fear – they’ve still got the classics (VB, Carlton Draught) on hand. If you’re down for something a bit heavier, there’s many a shelf dedicated to bourbon, with 30 types of brown gold available for the tasting. Enjoy it on its own, with some coke, or as part of a tasty cocktail. Of particular mention is the Gold Rush – a spiced bourbon sour cocktail that is guaranteed to refresh on a warm summer’s day.

In terms of bites, former sous chef of Surry Hills restaurant Dove & Olive Devendra Sherchan brings that classic pub food – with a deep Southern American twist. Expect some deep fried goodness. The cuisine ranges from snack-style Fixin’s to the heartier Grub and Grill selections. Start with the Big Tex Bacon Bites (bacon which has been crumbed and fried) and continue on with Kentucky bourbon Black Angus rump steak. Vegetarians and vegans aren’t forgotten  – grab the mouth-watering vegan maple-glazed polenta cake. Dessert at the K&B is not for the faint-hearted, with a deep-fried Twinkie covered in chocolate fondue and sprinkles that will test even the most hardened sweet tooth.

FUN FACT

The pub was originally opened in 1936 as the KB Hotel, which was a Foveaux Street favourite for many years. It was only taken over and transformed earlier this year by the owners of the Dove & Olive – another Surry Hills favourite.
