Judith Lucy & Denise Scott: Disappointments (MICF)

"Be prepared to hear the words "strapping antlers to my vulva", and take that as setting the tone"

More Judith Lucy More Judith Lucy

Taking a stand (or, in this case, a lie down) against the comedic ways of old, Judith Lucy and Denise Scott welcome the audience from the comfort of a couple of on-stage beds. Tonight, they are the new John and Yoko of grumpy Baby Boomers.

The duo are more painfully aware of their demographic than any other comics, and Scott and Lucy couldn't give any less of a shit as they tear into their middle-aged punters like there's no tomorrow. Their back and forth is incredibly well polished, especially considering the fact that they are not an established double act, and the two play off each other with total ease, underpinned by a bizarre, angry affection for one another.

Much of the show is centred around the performers entering the twilight of their lives, and the things that tend to go unsaid by their contemporaries. The pair take TMI and kick it into overdrive, with the phrase "dry vagina" being uttered on many an occasion (once is not enough, apparently). Scott and Lucy are gleefully unashamed of themselves; no topic is too taboo, with journeys into the audience for chats on dick pics and menopause, all with the wry grin of which both the performers are masters.

More than anything else, there is a raw and bare friendship on display tonight. If The Muppets ever needed female counterparts to Statler and Waldorf, Lucy and Scott should be immediately put on retainer. They have shared a life of celebrity and comedy, and to see them bounce off each other with total effortlessness is fun for fans young and old. They put crowd members in their place without a care for anyone but themselves, and put themselves forward exactly how anyone who knows them would expect them to. It's a little cheesy, a lot of gross, and exactly the right amount of Scott and Lucy.

If there's any doubts about exactly what kind of show this is, be prepared to hear the words "strapping antlers to my vulva", and take that as setting the tone. Scott and Lucy are a couple of glorious old farts who are nowhere near giving up, and it's hard not to absolutely love them for it.

Denise Scott and Judith Lucy present Disappointments till 22 Apr at Arts Centre Melbourne, part of the Melbourne International Comedy Festival.
