EP Focus: The Belligerents

The Belligerents chat to us about their new EP, She Calls The Shots.

What's the title of your new EP?
She Calls The Shots
(aka please stay away from my apartment and stop calling me).

How many releases do you have now?
We've got two EPs and a few singles thrown in the mix. After 2.5 years together we're not really focused on when and how much music to release; it's more about how our sound has matured and what we want to be putting out there.

How long did it take to write/record?
Half a year in pre-production and five days in the studio. Lewis, Andy and myself spent ages on the pre-production and the writing and then everybody came together in the studio and Yanto Browning (Art Of Sleeping, The Medics, The Jungle Giants) brought all our ideas onto tape (aka Pro Tools). Some of the tracks, such as Wait, were written about 18 months ago. It moved from being a bedroom techno jam about double the speed and is now a slow-creeping, dancefloor, fist-pumper.

Was anything in particular inspiring you during the making?
A crazy stalker girlfriend. Three songs on the EP are about this girl that one of us used to date. She was crazy from the start, but shit started to get out of hand after the break-up. One song is about her being crazy, another is about the break-up and yet another is about the stalking afterwards.

What's your favourite song on it?
She Calls The Shots
and Wait. Both are heaps of fun to play live and we haven't gotten over them yet. She Calls The Shots has a massive breakdown and Wait has this huge drop right at the end – there are about ten, sub-layered sub hits and Stag pretty much shakes the room anytime he triggers them. People on drugs love it.

Will you do anything differently next time?
We'll get more vintage synths, double the pedals, and we'll triple the intensity and record it on a boat.

Will you be launching it?
On Saturday 11 August at FBi Social with Conics!!
